The Home Of Jazz Funk & Soul

  • Jeremy Kelsall

Jez Kelsall presents the New City Soul show on Friday evenings, 9pm to 11pm, on Base Radio. This is a mix of modern soul covering – soulful, vocal, funky, jazzy and disco house.

Jez's love of music took hold in the early 70's when he discovered soul and funk. The early influences being the Ohio Players, Kool & the Gang, Parliament, Earth Wind & Fire and the Fatback Band. Although living in Stoke on Trent, Jez and his fellow funkateers regularly attended All-Dayers at the famous Blackpool Mecca and other esteemed venues, such as the Ritz in Manchester. These events usually combined Northern Soul and Jazz Funk. The Jazz Funk scene introduced Jez to artists such as Lonnie Liston Smith, George Duke and his all-time favourite, Roy Ayres

In the early 80's Jez began DJ'ing with residences in nightclubs in Stoke, playing mainly US Import 12" singles. This was largely the latest dance music including Electro but also Jazz Funk by request. Over the years Jez built a substantial vinyl collection, which he still owns and uses at selected events.

Jez has been in Bristol for over 28 years and returned to DJ'ing several years ago, after taking time out to raise a family. He has played in many Bristol clubs, pubs and bars including Lakota, Blue Mountain,Timbuk2, Basement 45, Dojos, Pam Pam, Totos, Pasture, Bambalan, Pata Negra, Broken Dock as well as the Lo Lounge in Cardiff. Over the last 7 years, he has presented radio shows on Soultrain Radio, iGrove Radio and now Base Radio. Jez has enjoyed playing at the amazing Soultrain weekenders in Ibiza and Tenerife. He currently DJs for Soultrain Bristol, Groove Street DJs, Select DJs UK and Terrace Soul events.
