The Home Of Jazz Funk & Soul

  • Andy Hooton

Hi everyone, Andy Hooton (“Andy H”) here…..Wolverhampton born and bred, but now exiled in Leicestershire and spreading the Black Country dialect to anyone who is brave enough to attempt to decipher what I’m saying! I’ve been “on the one” since 1974 when I first heard some “proper” Kool & The Gang – the track that really hit home being “Rated X” from the “Good Times” album. I began as a collector (and still collect), before the progression to DJ-ing in the late 1970s, initially at house parties. Venue-wise, I regularly attended all-dayers at Manchester Ritz; Blackpool Mecca and Birmingham Locarno. I went to some great clubs too – Rafters (Manchester); Chaplin’s (Birmingham); Rum Runner (Birmingham) and Soul/Funk/Jazz-Funk nights at Club Lafayette in Wolverhampton. I’ve been broadcasting for several years now, and I’m honoured to present “Shifting Gears” (anthem-free, non-mainstream music from the tougher side of town) on the wonderful station that is JFSR (Tuesday’s at 8pm - UK time).
